Acura Hybrid
In
2002 Acura unveiled its concept hybrid car, the Acura RD-X. The
RD-X features a 200hp i-VTEC with hybrid power assistance from Honda's
Integrated Motor Assist hybrid system, concept styling, and a 6
speed manual transmission. The RD-X is slated for release sometime
in 2007, though it may never leave the concept phase. If the RD-X
does make it to production, expect a toned down exterior, and some
changes to the interior to make manufacture more economical.
Acura's
hybrid plans do not end at the RD-X, in fact, it is the second of
the Acura proposed hybrids. The 2006 Acura RL will most likely feature
all wheel drive, but in a revolutionary way; a 300hp gasoline motor
would power the front wheels, and a 100hp electric motor would power
the rear wheels. This hybrid technology could make the RL the first
hybrid car in the luxury class, as it would certainly feature the
same amenities as the 2004 Acura RL.
Though currently the luxury division of Honda does
not feature any production hybrids, the future is looking very good
for Acura, and especially luxurious for any hybrid enthusiasts who
are searching for a gasoline-electric automobile practical for family
use.
